Microneedling
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as Collagen Induction Therapy is where a handheld device using a single use sterile needle-tip configuration containing tiny micro-needles to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin is gently hovered over the skin. This initiates the skin’s repair process to naturally produce collagen and elastin, ideal for smoothing fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, traumatic scars, and stretch marks.
Micro-channels created by the treatment allow for optimal absorption of clinical topical products and vitamins, enhancing their effects in the inner layers of skin. Microneedling can be used on all areas of the face and body.
Microneedling brings a range of benefits to your skin, some of these are detailed below:

Skin peels.
A pre peel is added to the treatment prior to the Microneedling, which balances the skin to the correct PH level, when the peel is added this removes any dead skin cells at a superficial level and exfoliates the skin more effectively than any scrub! In turn, this also stimulates the growth of new cells. The peel used in conjunction with the microneedling treatment will be a superficial peel however for clients suffering with acne and scarring, a medium strength peel can be used if suitable.
What is a skin peel?
A chemical peel is solution applied to the face to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the growth of new cells.
The aim is to improve the appearance of the skin – for example, by reducing age spots and evening out skin tone.
There are 3 types of peels, called superficial, medium and deep.
Superficial peels
cells are removed from the top layer of skin (epidermis)
the solution is applied to the skin and left on for a few minutes
your skin may feel tight for a couple of hours afterwards
regular treatment is needed to maintain the effects
Medium peels
skin cells are removed from the top and middle layers of skin
the solution is applied and left on for a few minutes
you may feel burning or stinging when it's on your face
your skin may go brown or red for a few days afterwards
it can take up to 6 weeks for your skin to return to normal
treatment is needed every 6 to 12 months to maintain the effects
Deep peels
affect the deeper layers of skin
a local anaesthetic and sedative may be needed to numb any pain
the solution is applied to the face and can be left on for 30 minutes or more
your heart and blood pressure need to be watched because the chemical used (phenol) can affect your heart and kidneys
you'll have some peeling, redness and discomfort for a few days
swelling can last up to 2 weeks, and redness can last up to 3 months
often lightens the skin so it's not really suitable for darker skin
it has long-lasting effects so does not usually need to be repeated
Some FAQs regarding Microneedling.
What does it feel like?
Microneedling feels similar to very fine sandpaper being moved across the skin. The treatment itself is tolerable and not painful so no numbing cream is required. The whole procedure including skin peel takes approximately 1 hour.
What can I expect after a Microneedling procedure?
The skin will be flushed, similar to a mild to moderate sunburn, for up to 24 hours. For deeper treatments this can last for a couple of days. You may also experience mild swelling, dryness, and tightness. Side effects are temporary and typically resolve within 3 days. Total healing time depends on the depth of the treatment, skin type, and skin condition. Some patients may heal completely in 24 hrs. An SPF50 is applied to the skin directly after to protect the skin and we advise all clients to do so on a daily basis going forward.
What I should avoid on my skin after treatment?
To ensure the most ideal healing environment, do not use AHA’S (Glycolic Acid), retinols, Vitamin C Serums or any alcohol-based toners for 2-3 days after your procedure. No direct sun exposure.
When will I see results?
Clients typically notice an immediate glow, but visible improvement will take about 2-4 weeks and can continue for up to 6 months as the skin heals and produces collagen and elastin.
How many treatments will I need?
A series of 3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart is ideal for optimal results. Deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks and acne scars will need a minimum of 6-8 treatments, however you can expect to see a gradual enhancement throughout the treatment course.
